Core Skills: Joinery 1

Joinery is to woodworking what sewing is to garment making: the techniques that hold all the pieces together. We start with the joints used in tables, chairs and carpentry frames of all kinds. This 4-day class runs in three formats:

  • Weekdays: 10.00 to 16.00, Monday to Thursday, most months
  • Weekends: 10.00 to 16.00, Saturday and Sunday over two weekends
  • Evenings: 18.00 to 20.30, Thursdays for eight sessions

We also run a 2-day Joinery Weekender, which covers the first two days of Joinery 1. If two days is too much of a commitment, try our All-day Taster or Evening Taster for a short, sharp introduction.

Core Skills: Joinery 2

Concentrates on the joint used to make boxes, drawers and cabinets: the dovetail. While it should come after Joinery 1, it isn't a disaster if you pick this one first. It runs Monday to Thursday, two or three times a year. We also offer a 2-day Dovetail Weekender.

Core Skills: Wood Machining & Portable Power Tools

While Joinery 1 and 2 develop your hand skills, this class teaches you to use power tools such as the circular saw, the router and drills, so you work more productively and, above all, safely. We use joinery to make a small, circular table. We run this three times a year.

Core Skills: Understanding Wood

We answer our students' most common questions: how to buy wood, how to look after it, and which timber is best for a given project. Everyone who has joined us says it taught them more than they imagined, cleared up a lot of misunderstandings and made them more confident choosing materials. Because much of the class takes place outside the workshop, the four-day course runs once a year in the summer. We also run Understanding Wood weekenders at various points throughout the year.
