Helen Welch – Director
Sustainability Policy
The London School of Furniture Making Ltd is a private company that runs craft training courses in furniture making and allied trades.
We recognise that our activities have an impact on the environment, especially in the areas of procurement, waste production, and energy use. We operate a management system to control and minimise these impacts both locally and globally. This policy provides the framework for that system and details the actions we are taking. Each year we review what we are doing to see where we can make significant improvements to our everyday practice and make positive contributions to society.
Energy
Lights and equipment are switched off when not required and heating controls are accurately set.
Our portable power tools are chosen for their energy efficiency and long service life.
Charitable Donations
We donate a proportion of our turnover to emerging carbon removal technologies.
We donate to Macmillan Cancer Support through sales of tools donated to our school.
Waste
We communicate electronically to remove to need for paper.
All waste is removed by a licensed carrier.
We avoid single-use plastics and disposables.
We endeavour to use materials that can be recycled, reused, or readily composted.
Travel
We encourage participants travelling our courses to use public transport or bicycles.
Procurement
We select products made from solid timber for the majority of our courses. Imported timber is FSC certified by our suppliers, or it comes from UK trees that have been felled and seasoned locally.
We purchase our portable power tools based on energy efficiency, recyclability, and long service life.
We encourage our instructors and students to buy from nearby shops and businesses to ensure the local economy benefits from our presence.
Social Responsibility
We are an LGBTQIA+ -run organisation that actively supports inclusion and diversity across communities and local schools.
We provide a safe space for members of marginalised groups and those who do not feel included or seen in the wider society.
